Ivory Coast Embraces Chinese Kung Fu Beyond Bruce Lee

Meite Siaka, a tax official and deputy mayor in Ivory Coast, founded the Ivorian Federation of Chinese Martial Arts in 2008 and now leads several kung fu clubs. Siaka attributes the initial interest in Chinese martial arts to 1970s films, particularly those featuring Bruce Lee, but notes Hong Kong cinema and television also played a role.

The discipline and themes of resistance presented in these films appeal to working-class youth in Abidjan, the country’s economic capital. This interest extends beyond Ivory Coast, influencing French-speaking West Africa as a whole.

The growing popularity of kung fu in the region has positioned Ivory Coast as a hub for Chinese martial arts in West Africa. Siaka’s federation aims to further develop this interest and expand the practice of Chinese martial arts throughout the country and neighboring nations.
