Why this is here: The mobile court initiative in Unity State concluded 449 cases in the last two years, reversing a prior situation where no cases were resolved, demonstrating increased access to formal justice systems.

The United Nations plans to continue supporting mobile courts in South Sudan. These courts aim to expand access to justice in remote areas and those affected by conflict. Two mobile courts currently operate in Central Equatoria and Unity states.

The Central Equatoria court resolved 12 of 23 cases between March 4 and 19. Eight of the concluded cases involved sexual and gender-based violence.

A second court began operating in Unity State on March 23. It will address criminal and civil cases, including murder and conflict-related sexual violence. UN data shows 449 cases concluded in 2024 and 2025, compared to zero cases decided in Unity State in 2023.
