Kazakhstan Bids to Host New Global AI Body

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan proposed that Astana host the inaugural meeting of the World AI Cooperation Organization and establish the organization’s Central Asian office within Kazakhstan. He made the offer at the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on July 17, emphasizing Kazakhstan’s desire to participate in AI governance and development. Twenty-nine countries signed the agreement forming the organization, with Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan among the founding members.

Tokayev also proposed a “Kazakhstan-China Digital Bridge” to promote digital trade and integration with China’s Belt and Road Initiative, following the signing of over 70 agreements worth more than $15 billion between the two countries. Domestically, Kazakhstan is investing in digital infrastructure, including a large data center project in Ekibastuz intended to attract investment and create jobs.

The country’s multi-vector approach to technology seeks to balance partnerships with both China and the United States, positioning Kazakhstan as a key player in the emerging AI landscape. Success will depend on realizing these ambitious projects and building lasting technical expertise.
