Kyrgyzstan Reduces Premature Deaths

The Ministry of Health in Kyrgyzstan reports a decline in premature mortality with support from Switzerland. From 2018 to 2026, a project focused on non-communicable diseases lowered the DALY rate by roughly 29 percent across the country. This work prevented over 92,000 premature deaths and avoided economic losses of about 44.8 billion soms.

The project strengthened primary healthcare and improved early detection of illnesses. It also focused on lifestyle changes, with smoking rates falling by roughly 19 percent in targeted regions. Digitalization received attention, as medical organizations received computer equipment for electronic records.

National campaigns reached over 1.1 million men in 2026 and more than 1 million women in 2025, promoting preventative care. The Ministry acknowledges ongoing needs to further develop prevention systems and public health in Kyrgyzstan.
