Azerbaijan’s delegation presented the country’s cultural heritage protection priorities at the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Busan, Republic of Korea. Ambassador Elman Abdullayev delivered a national statement reaffirming Azerbaijan’s commitment to the 1972 Convention Concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage.

Azerbaijan outlined its long-term “Azerbaijan Culture, 2040” Concept, a strategic framework for cultural heritage management, documentation, legal protection, and restoration. Despite ongoing challenges with mine contamination, Azerbaijan continues to inventory and document heritage sites.

The delegation also announced the “Azerbaijan-SIDS World Heritage Capacity Building Programme” aimed at strengthening heritage systems in small island developing states, and highlighted the SECURE initiative, which will be presented at a dedicated event during the session. Azerbaijan pledged support for UNESCO strategies focused on Africa and SIDS, and looks to collaborate with other member states to improve the World Heritage system.
