Opinion: B.c. Secures Billions Through New Federal Partnership

British Columbia Premier David Eby announced a new Canada-British Columbia cooperative prosperity agreement that will deliver billions of dollars to the province for major projects, infrastructure, jobs, and public services. The agreement includes investment in the Red Chris mine expansion, expected to create 1,800 construction jobs and protect 1,500 permanent positions, as well as funding for the North Coast transmission line and the Massey Tunnel replacement.

Eby contrasts his government’s approach to negotiations with that of the B.C. Conservatives, claiming they would have conceded on environmental protections like the North Coast tanker ban in exchange for federal funds. He frames the deal as a recognition of B.C.’s economic strengths and a commitment to responsible development.
