Opinion: Heat Pumps Offer Cooling and Heating Solution

Jana Elbrecht and Joanna Kyriazis of Clean Energy Canada argue that heat pumps offer a practical solution to rising summer temperatures and can also provide efficient heating. As extreme heat becomes more frequent, particularly in regions unaccustomed to it, many households lack adequate cooling.

While air conditioning adoption is increasing, the authors suggest heat pumps, which function as both air conditioners and heaters, present a more efficient and cost-effective option. Clean Energy Canada modeling indicates households could save $169 annually on energy bills by switching to a cold climate air source heat pump instead of a natural gas furnace and A/C.

The authors note that a province-wide shift to heat pumps could save the equivalent of 80,000 households’ worth of electricity. They urge the British Columbia provincial government to require all new central air conditioning systems to be reversible heat pumps, citing similar costs and significant long-term benefits. The authors emphasize that 91% of current heat pump owners would recommend them to others.
