UK Unveils First Land Use Framework for England

gov.uk · 18 March 2026

Why this is here: The Framework incorporates the most advanced land use analysis ever undertaken in England, providing detailed data to support decision-making across sectors like housing, farming, and conservation.

England’s first Land Use Framework aims to manage land for homes, nature, energy, and food. The government published the plan to address inefficient land use and vulnerability to climate change. It asserts enough land exists to meet objectives with improved efficiency and multi-use strategies.

The Framework is based on advanced land use analysis. It will support food security and allow farmers to diversify amid extreme weather.

New modeling will help future-proof farming businesses. The plan also reforms the Farm Tenancy Forum to give tenant farmers more policy input.

The Framework includes a map of England’s natural assets to guide nature recovery efforts. By 2030, it anticipates restored peatlands, healthier coastal habitats, and expanded wetlands. It will also direct development away from flood plains to help deliver 1.5 million new homes.
