UK Government Pledges Focus on Rural Communities

The UK government published “The Future of Rural England” report, outlining a plan to better integrate the needs of rural communities into government policy. The report, drafted by the Rural Taskforce, identifies six key themes for thriving rural areas including economic growth, infrastructure, skills, health, safety, and connectivity.

A new cross-government board will oversee this effort, publicly reporting on progress annually and proactively assessing how policies impact rural England’s 9.7 million residents. Rural England currently contributes over £259 billion to the economy through its 500,000+ small and medium-sized businesses.

However, challenges like poor transport, digital connectivity, and a lack of affordable housing have historically hindered growth. The government aims to address these issues through “rural proofing”, systematically evaluating the impact of policies on rural areas. The initiative also focuses on ensuring rural communities benefit from devolution and keeps pace with national transitions like the move to electric vehicles, currently, 17.2% of public EV chargers are in rural areas.
