UK Army Powers Garrison with New Solar Farm

The British Army activated a new 1.7 GWh solar array at Larkhill Garrison in Wiltshire, England, to boost energy resilience and sustainability. The 2.5-hectare installation, comprised of over 4,000 photovoltaic panels, will generate enough electricity to power approximately 630 UK homes annually.

Any surplus energy produced will be distributed to neighboring camps at Bulford, Tidworth, and Perham Down. The project is part of the Army’s Project Prometheus, which aims to deploy solar technology across suitable sites.

The solar farm is projected to offset 352 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent each year, supporting the UK’s net zero goals. Larkhill achieved self-sufficiency for 73 days during peak daylight hours this year thanks to increased solar capacity, including both ground-mounted and rooftop installations.
