UK Prime Minister Launches Effort to End Rough Sleeping

The new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom announced a national drive to end rough sleeping, committing an additional £340 million in funding, bringing total investment to record levels. Speaking from 10 Downing Street, the Prime Minister rejected claims the issue is insurmountable, citing the success of the ‘Everyone In’ initiative during the pandemic as proof of rapid change.

The government will support mayors, councils, and public services in providing urgent assistance to vulnerable people before winter. Research indicates a year of rough sleeping costs approximately £20,128 per person, compared to £1,426 for preventative interventions.

The initial funding will focus on acquiring suitable homes and providing support for those experiencing long-term homelessness, with plans for a wider five-year program to follow. The Prime Minister aims to create a preventative state focused on investing in solutions rather than managing crises.
