UK Coastguard Keeps Current Pay Model

The UK’s Department for Transport announced it will maintain current arrangements for the Coastguard Rescue Service, reversing plans to switch to an expenses-only volunteer model in September 2026. The decision follows a Court of Appeal ruling clarifying that modest remuneration created a worker relationship with coastguard rescue officers (CROs). Initial plans to address this by moving to an expenses-only system were met with concern from officers, MPs, and unions.

A review of the information used to inform the decision revealed that two surveys undertaken were not detailed enough to accurately reflect the potential impact of the changes on CROs and their families. The Department for Transport will now engage with trade unions, officers, and Parliament to gather more robust data.

The government stated its commitment to recognizing and rewarding coastguard rescue officers while ensuring they can continue serving their communities. The Department will explore long-term options for achieving this, prioritizing public safety and support for those who protect the UK coastline.
