Tipperary Captain Reflects on 2001 Hurling Victory

Tommy Dunne, captain of the 2001 Tipperary All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship team, will lead his teammates as they are honored at Croke Park on Sunday. Dunne describes winning the championship as a life-changing moment, especially poignant as his then-girlfriend was in New York City just days before the 9/11 attacks. The 2001 victory ended a 19-year drought for Tipperary in the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship.

Dunne has since dedicated himself to developing the next generation of hurling players in Tipperary. He currently leads the development of a new five-year strategic plan for the county’s GAA program, focusing on athletic coordination and senior development squads.

He emphasizes the importance of belief and opportunity in fostering talent, drawing on his own experience and the influence of mentors like Nicky English and Dr. Liam Hennessy. Dunne hopes the new plan will broaden participation and break down barriers for aspiring players and coaches.
