Why this is here: The discovery of two sets of twins within two months suggests a potentially positive trend for the endangered mountain gorilla population in Virunga National Park.

Conservationists announced the birth of mountain gorilla twins in Virunga national park, Democratic Republic of Congo. This marks the second twin birth discovered in the park within two months. Park wardens spotted an infant male and female within the Baraka family.

The Baraka family consists of nineteen mountain gorillas. They roam the high-altitude rainforests of the region. Mountain gorillas are an endangered primate species.

This recent birth is being celebrated as an “extraordinary event” by conservationists. Twin births are rare for this species. The first set of twins was discovered by rangers in the Virunga massif in January.
