Ancient Homes in Waterford Predate Stonehenge and Pyramids

Archaeologists in County Waterford, Ireland uncovered two Neolithic homes dating from 3600 to 3700 BC. The structures, found in the townland of Canty, predate Newgrange by centuries and are over 1,200 years older than the Great Pyramid of Giza. Excavations by Rubicon Archaeology Ltd and Roadstone Ltd also revealed a Bronze Age ring-ditch with 27 cremation burials.

The Cappagh valley site has long been known for archaeological finds, including Ice Age remains in local caves. These new discoveries demonstrate sustained settlement in the area from the Early Neolithic period onward.

The larger of the two homes measured 8.5 by 5.9 metres and contained over 120 sherds of prehistoric pottery. A polished stone axe found beneath the floor of one house suggests ritualistic practices. During Heritage Week 2026, Waterford County Museum and Rubicon Archaeology will host an exhibition detailing the finds.
