Annan Harbour Revives After Decades of Decline

The Annan Harbour Action Group (AHAG) in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, began a £15.6 million project to redevelop Annan harbour on Wednesday. Once a thriving center for shipbuilding and commerce, the harbour has declined since the 19th century due to changes in shipping and transportation.

The redevelopment will create a maritime heritage center, event space, leisure lagoon, and café on the currently run-down site over the next two years. Funding for the project comes from the Scottish government, the UK government’s Levelling Up Fund, Dumfries and Galloway Council, and South of Scotland Enterprise.

Alan Thomson of AHAG noted the harbour was central to Annan’s development, bringing wealth and jobs to the area. While the project won’t be a massive employer, potentially creating 10 to 12 jobs, it aims to boost tourism and improve the town’s economic outlook. The group also plans to rewild the area with native species to increase biodiversity.
