Northern Ireland households to receive electricity bill discount

Northern Ireland households will each receive a £63 reduction on their electricity bills starting next month.

The UK government is funding the discount, which applies automatically to all customers without requiring an application. Bank payment customers will see the reduction directly on their bills, while those using pay-as-you-go meters will receive £63 in credit when they add funds.

Pay-as-you-go customers need to top up their meters with no more than £112 at a time to ensure they receive the full £63 discount in a single payment, as meters have a £175 limit. The Department for the Economy, led by Dr Caoimhe Archibald, worked with the UK government to implement the scheme in Northern Ireland. This discount mirrors similar policies in Great Britain that lowered VAT and removed certain consumer levies.

UK officials chose not to apply the VAT cut in Northern Ireland because they believed doing so would have required EU agreement and caused delays. Future bill reductions of a similar nature are planned for the next two years, but their size will depend on continued government funding. Rising energy prices, influenced by conflict in the US and Iran, are contributing to higher costs for consumers.

The Northern Ireland Consumer Council reports that 500 litres of home heating oil now costs around £560, more than double the price from a year ago.
