Boy Swims for Hours to Save Family in Australia

Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin met 13-year-old Austin after he swam for hours to get help for his family off the west coast of Australia. On January 30, the family was swept out to sea while paddleboarding, and Austin’s mother asked him to swim for help. He swam the final 4km after his kayak capsized.

Austin and his family, originally from County Monaghan, returned to Ireland two weeks ago and appeared on the RTÉ show The Late Late Show. His mother described the ordeal as “every mother’s nightmare.”

Monaghan County Council held a civic reception honoring Austin’s courage earlier this month. Irish President Catherine Connolly also sent him a letter praising his bravery, which has resonated internationally. Authorities continue to emphasize water safety following the incident, but details about conditions at the time remain unclear.
