Teen Pianist Passes Grade 8 with One Hand

Seventeen-year-old Freya Terris of Lisburn, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, made history by passing her Grade 8 piano exam playing solely with her left hand. Two years ago, an injury and surgery left Freya unable to use her right hand, initially threatening her beloved hobby.

She and her teacher explored left-hand repertoire, eventually contacting ABRSM (the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) to inquire about modified exams. ABRSM accommodated Freya’s request, providing a list of pieces specifically written for the left hand.

Though frustrated at first by the limitations, Freya persevered, driven by her determination and support network. Her success has prompted ABRSM to introduce a dedicated one-hand repertoire list for all grades, from 1 to 8, starting with their 2027-28 syllabus.

This change will allow pianists with one-handed limitations in 93 countries to pursue recognized qualifications. Freya plans to study music at university and hopes her achievement will inspire others.
