UK Libraries to Become Music Hubs with Sheeran’s Backing

The UK government will transform public libraries across England into “music lending spaces” offering free studio time and performance opportunities. The initiative, inspired by Ed Sheeran’s charity work funding similar programs, received at least £12.5 million in funding. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy secured the funding after visiting Brighten The Corners in Ipswich with Sheeran last year, observing the town’s successful music ecosystem.

The program aims to address a growing disparity between large-scale concerts and grassroots music scenes, providing resources for aspiring musicians from all backgrounds. Musician Guvna B highlighted the safe and comfortable environment libraries offer for creative expression, particularly for young people.

Alongside this, £15 million will boost the Music Growth Package and licensing restrictions for music events will be relaxed. The LIVE Trust also announced a £1 million funding boost, raised by artists donating £1 per ticket sold, to support emerging artists and venues, acknowledging the pressures facing the grassroots music scene where three nightclubs close weekly.
