Teen gymnast defies expectations to win European medals

Uzair Chowdhury, a 16-year-old from Luton, England, recently defended his parallel bars and team titles at the Junior European Championships in Croatia.

Chowdhury began gymnastics at age six after a friend of his mother noticed his high energy. He credits his mother, Syeda, and coach, Ben Howells, with supporting his demanding training schedule, which involves a six-day-a-week, three-hour commute to Huntingdon Gymnastics Club in Cambridgeshire.

Chowdhury feels he had to overcome prejudice as a boy of Bangladeshi heritage entering a sport where he didn't initially receive encouragement. He wants to inspire other members of the Asian community and younger generations to participate in sports, demonstrating that anyone can achieve success with dedication. His teammate, 19-year-old Sol Scott, also won medals at the competition and acknowledged the sacrifices his family made to support his athletic goals.

Both Chowdhury and Scott hope to compete for Team GB at the 2028 and 2032 Olympics. They believe role models like Louis Smith, Jake Jarman, and Simone Biles have broadened access to gymnastics, but more work remains to challenge perceptions about which sports are for men and women. Their coach, Ben Howells, expressed pride in their achievements and noted the need for further investment in Huntingdon Gymnastics Club to bring its facilities to a world-class standard.
