Ugandan 'Ghetto Kids' Dance Their Way to World Cup Stage

A Ugandan dance group called Ghetto Kids performed alongside Shakira during the halftime show of the FIFA World Cup final in Qatar. The group began in 2014 with Dauda Kavuma, a teacher from Kampala, Uganda, who sought to help vulnerable children from the Katwe slum afford school fees.

Ghetto Kids combined traditional African dance with energy and humor, gaining attention through videos posted on social media. Their 2014 performance of Eddy Kenzo’s “Sitya Loss” went viral, leading to appearances in music videos and performances across Africa and the United Kingdom.

The group’s visibility grew with a 2017 feature in French Montana’s “Unforgettable” music video, which has garnered 1.9 billion views on YouTube. In 2023, they performed at a Paris Saint-Germain match and reached the finals of “Britain’s Got Talent”. Their World Cup performance represents a culmination of years of dedication and a fulfilled dream.
