Haine River Contract Launches 962 Actions

Officials in Belgium signed a program of 962 actions for the Haine River basin at the Harchies marshes. The Haine River sub-basin covers 801.4 square kilometers and includes over 1700 kilometers of waterways. Twenty-three municipalities participate in the Haine River Contract, including parts of Beloeil and Bernissart.

Corentin Eeckhout, assistant coordinator of the Haine River Contract, noted Beloeil participates in three river contracts. Bernissart is involved in two, with the majority of its work focused on the Haine. The program includes restoring ponds near the mine museum in Harchies, potentially with student involvement.

Researchers also study flood risks along the Grand Courant stream, which feeds into the Haine. These actions will be carried out by 64 organizations and the contract’s coordination team. Further study is needed to fully understand the long-term impact of these measures.
