Liège City Denies Permit for Nine-Unit Apartment Building

Why this is here: The collective “Autour des Orchidées” successfully opposed a building project that would have removed 12 mature trees, demonstrating the impact of organized community action on urban development.
The city of Liège refused a permit for a nine-unit apartment building on Rue de Herve. The collective “Autour des Orchidées” celebrated the decision after opposing the project since a public inquiry. The proposed building would have spanned four stories and required the removal of 12 trees from a green space.
The collective previously received a negative assessment from the city council in 2021. Reasons for the permit denial included the building’s size, its location within a green area, deforestation, and potential impacts on mobility.
This victory follows a recent success for residents who stopped a car storage lot from operating in the neighborhood. The city ordered the owner of the lot to restore the site and end the “visual pollution.”
