AI Tackles Malaria in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The University of Mons (UMons) in Belgium joined a project to fight malaria in the Democratic Republic of Congo, partnering with the University of Lubumbashi and the ESME engineering school. The KUPAMAL project will use artificial intelligence to improve malaria diagnosis and research new treatments derived from Congolese medicinal plants. The initiative builds on a prototype algorithm already developed to automatically detect malaria parasites in microscopic observations.
The project, funded by the Academy of Research and Higher Education (ARES) with approximately 500,000 euros, will deploy the AI tool in health centers and university labs across eight health zones in the Haut Katanga province.
UMons will contribute its expertise in in vitro culture of the Plasmodium parasite and chemical analysis of plant extracts. Researchers hope to strengthen local research capacity and create tools suited to the DRC’s specific healthcare needs. The five-year project officially begins in December 2026.
