Belgian Carnival Groups to Honor Resilience at National Day Parade

Five carnival societies from Strépy-Bracquegnies, Belgium, will participate in the July 21st National Day parade in Brussels, marking a return to public life after a tragic incident in 2022. The groups were deeply affected when a driver struck their carnival procession during a pre-Lenten gathering, killing seven people and injuring 79.

The invitation to the Fête au Parc, a traditional celebration of Belgian folklore, was extended as a gesture of support for the victims and their families, and to highlight the enduring spirit of the carnival tradition. The groups intend to demonstrate unity, with members wearing either traditional “soumonces” costumes or the distinctive sarraus with red or white neckerchiefs.

Virginie Pilette, President of the carnival societies’ association, emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the tragedy while affirming the continuation of folklore. The driver responsible for the 2022 collision was sentenced to 27 years in prison on June 27, 2026.
