Brussels Air Quality Improves for Sixth Straight Year

Brussels Environment reports that air quality in the Brussels-Capital Region improved again this year, meeting current European pollution limits for the sixth consecutive year. State Secretary for Climate, Ans Persoons, confirmed the findings in the 2025 annual report. Concentrations of particulate matter, ozone, sulfur dioxide, and carbon monoxide have all decreased in recent years, and nitrogen dioxide emissions continue to fall.

These improvements stem from policies promoting sustainable mobility and energy transition. However, pollution remains a concern along busy roads, where future European standards and World Health Organization recommendations are still exceeded.

Air pollution continues to contribute to cardiovascular diseases, respiratory problems, asthma, and premature death, prompting Brussels to invest further in emissions reduction. Persoons also emphasizes the need for additional effort at the European level to meet stricter WHO health guidelines.
