Ukraine War Boosts Estonian Women’s Defense Group

Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Women's Voluntary Defense Organisation (Naiskodukaitse) in Estonia experienced a surge in membership from women with no prior military experience. The organization, a branch of the Estonian Defense League, focuses on broad national defense including medical training, communications, and civilian crisis preparedness. Researcher Ulvi Karu’s recent bachelor’s thesis examined the motivations of women joining after 2022, finding that a desire to gain skills and protect loved ones was central.

Karu’s interviews revealed that many new members had previously felt disconnected from military-related organizations, but the war in Ukraine prompted them to seek ways to contribute to national defense. The women emphasized the importance of both practical skills like first aid and understanding their role in a crisis.

The Naiskodukaitse aims for each member to have a specific crisis role, and Karu’s research indicates most are prepared to fulfill it. Karu hopes her findings will help the organization refine its messaging and attract future members by highlighting its focus on civilian protection and crisis readiness.
