200-Year-Old Infant Coffin Unearthed in Italy

Archaeologists in San Fiorano, Italy, discovered a small wooden coffin dating back approximately two centuries at the Mortorino cemetery. The coffin contained remarkably well-preserved remains of an infant, along with the fabric it was wrapped in, hair, and other organic materials.

Dr. Nataša Šarkić, an anthropologist with AITA Bioarchaeology, explained that such complete preservation after 200 years is extremely rare, as remains typically reduce to skeletal form.

The unusual level of preservation offers a unique opportunity to study infant life and burial practices from the early 19th century. Researchers hope to gain insights into infant mortality rates and societal attitudes toward children.

Currently, scientists are planning to use CT scans to examine the remains without causing damage, as the soft tissues are exceptionally well-preserved. The excavation is part of a larger project to conserve the historical and artistic heritage of the area.
