Sarajevo Pedestrians Must Push Button for New Traffic System

Engineers in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, recently completed an upgrade to the city’s traffic system and are asking pedestrians to push buttons at crosswalks. The new system replaces older infrastructure with modern components including rotating cameras, radars, sensors, and updated signal plans.

The buttons allow pedestrians to signal their intent to cross, prompting a “Please wait” message and activating the system to adjust traffic flow. By registering pedestrian requests, the system aims to minimize unnecessary stops for vehicles when no one is crossing, creating a smoother flow for both cars and people.

The 20 million KM project also includes audio signals for visually impaired individuals. City officials hope citizens will use the buttons and help protect the new equipment as the adaptive traffic management expands to additional areas following the launch of a new tram line.
