Why this is here: Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein plans to add 120 standard electric buses, 52 articulated buses, and 16 minibuses to its fleet in the coming years.

The European Investment Bank is lending a billion euros to Hamburger Energienetze and Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein in Hamburg, Germany. Hamburger Energienetze will modernize the city’s power distribution networks, while Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein will purchase 188 new battery-electric buses and expand its Schenefeld depot. Roughly one-third of Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein’s 800 vehicle fleet currently runs on electricity, and the company has exclusively bought zero-emission buses since 2020.

The EIB’s loan will cover approximately 28% of Hamburger Energienetze’s planned €2.9 billion investment to expand and modernize Hamburg’s grid to 2029. This includes laying about 1,500 kilometers of new cable and building new substations. Verkehrsbetriebe Hamburg-Holstein plans to invest up to €337 million in electromobility, with the EIB contributing around 37% of that total.

Project partners acknowledge that grid capacity must keep pace with the growing electric bus fleet. They project Hamburg’s peak electricity demand will at least double by 2040. Further investment and coordination will be needed to meet these demands and fully realize Hamburg’s energy transition goals.
