China installed 76.5 GWh of power batteries in June, a 31.5% increase year-on-year, marking the fastest growth of 2026. This growth is largely driven by lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, which now account for a record 83.3% of installations.

Automakers are increasingly adopting LFP technology due to its lower cost and improved safety, despite its lower energy density compared to ternary batteries. Demand has rebounded after a slow start to the year, with both monthly and year-on-year growth accelerating.

Production is outpacing domestic vehicle installation demand, however, with China exporting 36.2 GWh of power and energy storage batteries in June, a 48.7% year-on-year increase. The energy storage sector is also contributing significantly to growth, with sales increasing 67.5% year-on-year in June. Industry analysts will be watching for potential pricing and capacity pressures as production continues to expand at a faster rate than sales.
