CATL and Alfen Partner to Bring Sodium Batteries to Europe

CATL and Alfen NV will deploy 5 GWh of sodium-ion battery energy storage systems across Western Europe beginning in 2027. This deal marks the first planned European installations of CATL’s Tener Sodium system, launched globally last month. The Tener Sodium system boasts a 25-year lifespan and offers a nearly 2% improvement in round-trip efficiency compared to some alternatives.

CATL intends to leverage this partnership to gain experience integrating sodium-ion batteries into European power grids and ensure compatibility with local standards. The move allows Alfen to diversify its battery chemistries and lessen reliance on lithium price volatility.

CATL is already preparing for large-scale production, with initial Chinese deliveries slated for September 2026 and global shipments planned for June 2027. This partnership follows a recent 60 GWh supply agreement in China and a $739 million investment in sodium-ion production capacity.
