The Auto Express team recently put 16 plug-in hybrid vehicles to the test, narrowing the field down to a final five: Range Rover Sport, BMW X3, Honda CR-V, Volkswagen Tayron, and MG HS. After rigorous evaluation of efficiency, dynamics, and refinement, the MG HS emerged as the overall winner.

Despite having a smaller battery than most competitors, the MG HS achieved an impressive 68-mile real-world electric range, securing its position at the top. It also delivered a solid 46.3mpg during the hybrid test run. Reviewers praised its value pricing, quality, and overall functionality, noting a lack of compromise despite its competitive price point.

The Volkswagen Tayron took second place, consistently performing well in both EV range and hybrid efficiency, with the ability to fast charge at 40kW. The Honda CR-V secured third, lauded for its clever PHEV technology, comfort, and build quality. The BMW X3 impressed with its engaging driving dynamics, while the Range Rover Sport offered a luxurious experience and impressive EV range but suffered from lower fuel efficiency once the battery was depleted.
