OMV’s Hydrogen Plant in Austria to Cost €600 Million

OMV and Masdar are building a hydrogen electrolysis plant in Bruck an der Leitha, Austria, with a projected cost of around €600 million and planned operation by the end of 2027. The European Investment Bank will provide a €450 million loan to finance construction. OMV and Masdar announced their joint venture in November 2025, with Masdar holding 49 percent and OMV 51 percent of the hydrogen joint venture.

Currently, the joint venture is finalizing contractual documents before official registration. The 140-megawatt plant has been under construction since autumn 2025 and is intended to be one of the largest green hydrogen facilities in Europe.

Austria committed up to €123 million in funding for the plant in early 2026, managed through Austria Wirtschaftsservice. Once operational around 2028, the facility will produce up to 23,000 tons of hydrogen annually using renewable energy, replacing fossil hydrogen in OMV’s Schwechat refinery via a 22-kilometer pipeline.
