Tech Helps Small Austrian Forest Owners Manage Woodlands

The Salzburg branch of the Austrian Agricultural Chamber is offering computer-aided forestry advice to small forest owners in Salzburg, Austria. These owners, who collectively manage nearly two-thirds of the region’s forests across plots averaging 5 to 10 hectares, often lack the resources to independently assess their woodland’s potential.

The chamber uses laser scanning data, aerial imagery, and land registry maps to calculate timber stocks and growth rates, replacing time-consuming on-the-ground surveys. This allows forest owners to answer key questions about their holdings, timber volume, growth, and appropriate forestry measures, with increased efficiency.

The service is particularly valuable for young farmers taking over family holdings, who face significant economic decisions. The Agricultural Chamber of Salzburg notes increasing forest growth due to climate change and emphasizes the need to utilize resources sustainably. Owners can request an individual “Forest Business Report” for a contribution of 50 Euros.
