Koralmbahn Railway to Boost Austrian Economic Region

JOANNEUM RESEARCH and the Institute for Economic and Regional Development completed a study showing the Koralmbahn railway, connecting Graz and Klagenfurt, will positively impact the Austrian regions of Carinthia and Styria. The railway will reduce travel time between the two cities from three hours to 45 minutes, fostering a new urban area encompassing approximately 1.1 million residents.

The improved accessibility is expected to slow population decline in the region by increasing access to urban infrastructure and job opportunities. Remote locations along the railway line will benefit from new business settlements and a larger labor pool.

The Koralmbahn is also part of the Baltic-Adriatic Corridor, a key trade route connecting seaports with central European industrial areas. Researchers highlight the project as Austria’s largest socio-economic undertaking since the Semmeringbahn railway. The project also aims to shift freight transport from roads to rail, reducing carbon emissions and improving access to the Balkan region.
