Heat Pumps Offer Cooler, Greener Alternative to Air Conditioning

Austrian experts are discussing whether heat pumps can effectively replace air conditioning as temperatures rise, particularly after Vienna recently reached 40 degrees Celsius. While air conditioners offer rapid cooling, heat pumps provide a different method, cooling surfaces like floors or ceilings to draw heat from a room.

This results in a gentler, longer-lasting chill without drafts. Though not as quick to cool as traditional air conditioning, modern heat pumps are typically equipped to reverse their function and can often be retrofitted to existing heating systems with the addition of a dew point sensor.

The technology is suitable for all building types, from single-family homes to large apartment complexes, though simultaneous heating, cooling, and hot water production may require additional equipment in larger buildings. Heat pumps also offer environmental benefits, as many older air conditioners use potent greenhouse gases as refrigerants. Combining a heat pump with on-site solar power can further reduce energy costs and environmental impact, potentially making cooling “more or less free.” Converting an existing heating system to include cooling is likely cheaper than installing a new air conditioning unit.
