Impulstanz Festival Revives Postmodern Dance Masters

The Impulstanz festival in Vienna, Austria is presenting works by Trisha Brown and Merce Cunningham, two key figures in postmodern dance, in a program titled “Dancing with Bob.” The festival features Brown’s “Set and Reset” from 1983 and Cunningham’s “Travelogue” from 1977, both created in collaboration with painter Robert Rauschenberg to commemorate his 100th birthday. Both pieces explore the intersection of dance, visual art, and music, though with distinct approaches. “Set and Reset” emphasizes flowing movement and seamless integration of costume and projection, while “Travelogue” playfully references American vaudeville with vibrant costumes and a soundscape incorporating bird song and live phone calls, including one answered by a John Harris Fitness employee.
