Chinese Dancers Explore Eternity Through Circular Motion

Chinese choreographer Tao Ye and the Tao Dance Theater are performing choreographic studies in Vienna, Austria, with performances of “13 & 14” at the Volkstheater and “16 & 18” at the Burgtheater. Ye describes the dancers themselves as the materials for their work, utilizing cyclical and ritualistic movements.

His “Circular Movement System” style, heavily influenced by eastern philosophy, aims to create a counterpoint to human transience.

Ye envisions the dancing body as a brushstroke painting circles into eternity. The performances represent a unique approach to dance, focusing on pure movement and philosophical concepts rather than narrative storytelling.
