Australia Eyes Data Centres to Boost AI, Not Power Bills

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced plans to fast-track data centre construction in Australia, aiming to support the growing artificial intelligence industry without increasing electricity prices. The government will require new, large data centres to offset their energy consumption with new renewable energy generation.

While AI data centres globally could triple power use by 2030, Australia’s developments could account for around 6% of national demand by 2030, potentially rising higher. Strategically locating data centres near stalled renewable energy projects, which often face grid connection delays, could unlock these projects by providing a guaranteed customer.

This approach could also decentralize the AI boom and benefit regional economies. Modern data centres are increasingly equipped with battery storage and energy management systems, allowing them to actively support grid stability and absorb renewable energy. The key question now is not how much power data centres will use, but how Australia can best integrate them into a renewable energy ecosystem.
