India Uranium Deal Sparks Mining Debate in Western Australia

Australia and India this week agreed to a deal allowing uranium exports from Australia to India for the first time, potentially unlocking billions of dollars for resource companies in Western Australia. Despite holding the world’s largest uranium deposits, 28 percent of the global total, WA currently has a moratorium on uranium mining, unlike South Australia which is actively producing it.

Explorers in Western Australia are now seeking permission to begin mining, anticipating substantial annual profits if the state government lifts the ban. The opposition alliance has pledged to overturn the moratorium if elected in 2029, citing WA’s capacity to become a major uranium producer.

However, the Conservation Council of WA opposes uranium mining, pointing to the risks of accidents and environmental damage, referencing the Fukushima disaster. The state premier currently prioritizes investment in renewable energy sources like wind and solar. The deal aims to support India’s nuclear energy goals while establishing a critical minerals corridor between the two countries.
