Over Half of New TB Cases in Morocco Affect Organs Beyond Lungs

Why this is here: The report specifies that extrapulmonary TB, affecting organs like lymph nodes or kidneys, now represents a majority of new cases, complicating diagnosis and treatment.
Morocco’s Health Ministry reported that 53% of new tuberculosis cases in 2025 affected organs beyond the lungs. The announcement coincided with World Tuberculosis Day 2026 and highlighted the challenges of detecting these extrapulmonary forms of the disease. The ministry emphasized the need for improved early diagnosis and increased vigilance among healthcare professionals.
Morocco plans to strengthen detection and treatment efforts for all TB forms. They will host a national scientific conference on March 26, gathering health officials, experts, and representatives from NGOs and the UN. The conference will address Morocco’s TB situation and improved management of extrapulmonary cases.
The country’s 2024-2030 strategic plan aims to reduce TB deaths by 60% and infection rates by 35%. TB diagnosis and treatment remain free in public health facilities, with ongoing efforts to improve access and worker skills. Tuberculosis is preventable and curable with early detection and proper treatment.
