Qatar Sets Green Building Standard with GSAS Recognition
Dr. Yousef Alhorr of the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (Gord) announced that over 3.1 billion square feet of built area in Qatar has earned Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) recognition.
The GSAS system, the first of its kind in the Middle East and North Africa, assesses environmental impact and promotes sustainable practices in design, construction, and operations. Nearly 2,700 projects in Qatar, including FIFA World Cup 2022 stadiums and the Qatar Rail network, have achieved GSAS recognition, with 200 projects certified in 2025 alone.
Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) and Qatar Museums have been key drivers of GSAS adoption, alongside Qatar Foundation and the Primary Health Care Corporation. The system utilizes eight criteria, from urban connectivity to management and operations, to evaluate projects and award certifications. Gord is now expanding GSAS beyond Qatar, following the GCC Standardisation Organisation’s adoption of GSAS as a regional standard and initial implementations in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
