Qatar Builds World-Class Emergency Medicine System

Shahzad Anjum, Khalid Bashir, and Alreem Alkuwari, researchers from Hamad Medical Corporation and Qatar University, detailed the evolution of Qatar’s emergency medicine system in a study published in the Qatar Medical Journal. The study reveals that strategic investments in infrastructure, training, and interprofessional education have transformed Qatar’s emergency care from a fragmented model to a cohesive, specialty-led network within a unified national healthcare system.

Qatar’s centralized public healthcare model includes 31 primary healthcare centers and numerous hospitals managing conditions like trauma, cardiovascular emergencies, and respiratory illnesses. The emergency medicine residency program has trained physicians from over 20 countries, with many remaining in Qatar to contribute to national healthcare capacity.

The system demonstrated resilience during both the Covid-19 pandemic, maintaining a comparatively low case-fatality rate, and the 2022 FIFA World Cup, successfully managing high-acuity patients. The authors suggest Qatar’s experience offers valuable lessons for other nations aiming to build robust emergency medicine services.
