Qatar Transforms Agriculture with Tech Amidst Harsh Climate

Qatar is rapidly modernizing its agricultural sector through substantial investment in technology to overcome limited arable land, scarce water, and extreme temperatures. Facing less than 2% arable land and minimal rainfall, the country has moved away from traditional farming and toward climate-controlled greenhouses and innovative techniques like hydroponics and aquaponics.

Since 2017, Qatar has prioritized “smart agriculture” and launched the National Food Security Strategy 2030, emphasizing advanced technologies, research, and private sector involvement. Farms are now utilizing IoT sensors, AI-powered systems, and drone technology to monitor crops, optimize resources, and increase yields.

The country currently produces around 120,000 tonnes of vegetables annually, meeting over 70% of its vegetable needs and 86% of its date consumption. Qatar’s agriculture market is valued at approximately QR1.34bn and is projected to grow at 7% annually, with significant investment in greenhouse, hydroponic, and agricultural analytics systems.
