Amman Increases Green Space per Person to 4.25 Square Meters

The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) in Jordan increased the city’s total green space to over 19,000 dunams, raising the per capita share to 4.25 square meters. This expansion is part of GAM’s environmental strategy to combat urban heat, lower pollution, and address climate change in the mountainous city.

GAM increased neighborhood parks from 134 to 145 and expanded larger public parks from 11 to 15 between 2022 and 2026, also rehabilitating existing parks like Uhud.

The municipality achieved a 50 percent increase in total managed green areas over four years, exceeding initial expansion targets. GAM’s nurseries now produce 80 percent of the trees and plants needed for these urban spaces. Experts note that these parks are vital infrastructure for health, social wellbeing, and environmental regulation, particularly in a city with complex topography.
