Jordan Updates Local Administration Law to Boost Governance

Jordan’s Ministry of Government Communication released key features of the 2026 Local Administration Law draft after the Lower House approved it. The law intends to strengthen local governance, improve public services, and encourage municipal investment to stimulate local economies throughout Jordan’s governorates.

The draft legislation clarifies the roles of municipal councils and executive bodies, aiming to reduce conflicting authorities and increase accountability. It preserves the current system of directly electing municipal council mayors and members.

The proposed law prioritizes equitable development by ensuring representation for both elected officials and less-developed regions. It also mandates automation and public reporting of financial and administrative performance to increase transparency. The draft now moves to the Parliamentary Administrative Committee for further discussion.
