Somaliland Sanctuary Rescues Cheetahs From Illegal Trade

Why this is here: The center currently supports a sizeable percentage of the remaining Horn of Africa cheetah population, housing 127 of the estimated 600 animals in the region.
A Somaliland center is rescuing cheetahs trafficked to Gulf countries as pets. The Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) currently houses 127 cheetahs, all removed from their mothers. Experts estimate only 600 cheetahs remain in the Horn of Africa.
The CCF, located in Geed-Deeble savannah, provides intensive care for rescued cubs. Last year, authorities intercepted a boat carrying eleven cubs, though three died shortly after rescue. Villagers receive $50 to $100 for capturing cheetahs, which are then sold for $15,000 to $20,000.
A 2021 report estimates 300 cheetahs are smuggled annually from East Africa and the Horn. The CCF is developing a 1,500-hectare rewilding area to prepare future rescues for release.
