Palestinians in West Bank Fly Kites Defying Settlers

Palestinian residents of Burin, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, held a kite festival on land they claim is being encroached upon by Israeli settlers. Since 2009, the annual summer event serves as both recreation for children and a symbolic act of defiance. Organizers say the kites represent a claim to the land and sky, especially as access to certain areas has been restricted.

The festival takes place under the shadow of Har Bracha, a settlement established in 1983 and considered illegal under international law. Residents report a recent increase in settler violence since the start of the war in Gaza, with attacks on homes and property.

Despite the risks and ongoing conflict, villagers are committed to continuing the tradition, viewing it as a way to strengthen their connection to the land and provide a moment of normalcy for their children.
